Trophy whitetail deer icon – Alberta Legacy Hunts guided hunting outfitter

Central Alberta Whitetail Hunting Outfitter

Our exclusive hunting territory spans prime whitetail habitat in central Alberta from Rocky Mountain House east to Ponoka-a region where the prairie foothills meet heavy timber, creating ideal conditions for trophy-class bucks. This productive zone consistently produces whitetails scoring 150-170+ inches, with realistic Boone & Crockett opportunities every season.

The central Alberta foothills provide superior genetics, quality nutrition from agricultural crops, and the perfect blend of cover and feed that allows bucks to reach exceptional size. Our private land access eliminates hunting pressure found on public crown land, giving mature deer the security to move naturally during daylight hours.

Located just 1.5-2 hours from Edmonton International Airport, our hunting area encompasses thousands of acres of exclusive private property. You’re hunting where legends are made.

November Rut Hunts | Peak Trophy Opportunity

Timing is everything in trophy whitetail hunting, and Alberta’s November rut is when magic happens. We focus all our guided hunts during peak rut activity-November 1st through 30th-when mature bucks abandon caution and become vulnerable during daylight hours.

During the Alberta rut season, bucks that normally move only at night begin actively seeking and chasing does throughout the day. This breeding phase creates unpredictable movement patterns and all-day hunting opportunities. That 170-inch giant you’ve dreamed of might appear at 10 AM on a ridge, or cruise past your stand at 2 PM-peak rut hunting rewrites the rules.

Our success rate is 80-90% for harvesting mature trophy bucks during these critical dates. With limited hunter numbers and expert guides who’ve studied these patterns, we position you where November rut activity is highest. This isn’t luck-it’s strategic hunting during Alberta’s most productive window, when trophy bucks make mistakes and hunters capitalize.

Guided Rifle and Bow Hunts

Every Alberta Legacy Hunts package includes expert professional guide service tailored to your preferences. Whether you prefer dedicated 1-on-1 guiding or two on one, we customize your hunt to match your goals and style.

Our rifle hunts are conducted from strategic stand locations overlooking proven travel routes, feeding areas, and doe bedding zones where mature bucks cruise during the rut. Your rifle should be accurate to 300 yards, and we recommend calibers like .270 Win, .30-06, or .300 Win Mag for Alberta’s large-bodied deer.

For bowhunters, we offer custom bow hunts with close-range setups in high-traffic areas. Our family’s hunting heritage began with Mark’s father Allan Groves as a master bowhunter in the 1970s, and that traditional archery expertise runs deep in our operation.

Our head guide, Mark Groves, brings brings over 20 years of experience as an official Boone & Crockett and Pope & Young measurer. He can field judge a trophy buck instantly and guide you to make the right decision when that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presents itself.

Boone & Crockett Trophy Whitetails on Private Land

Alberta whitetails are legendary for combining massive body size with exceptional antler growth. This province consistently produces some of North America’s most impressive trophy bucks, with the genetics, nutrition, and habitat to grow true giants.

Our exclusive private land access is your competitive advantage. While public crown land hunters compete for space and pressure deer into nocturnal patterns, our limited-access private properties allow mature bucks to move naturally. Selective harvest management and low hunter numbers mean bucks reach 4.5-6.5 years old, the age class that produces 160-180+ inch trophies and Boone & Crockett caliber deer.

Realistic expectations on our hunts: average mature bucks score 140-160 inches, with regular opportunities at 150-170+ class deer. Multiple 170+ inch bucks qualifying for the Boone and Crockett record book are taken every season in this region of Alberta. The trophy potential is real, not marketing hype.

Combined with peak November rut timing, expert guides, and prime central Alberta genetics, you’re hunting where a record-book buck could present itself for the chance of a lifetime. This is trophy whitetail hunting at its finest.

Mark’s dad, Allan Groves, was a master bowhunter who started guiding in the early 70’s.

Mark honors his late father by carrying on in his footsteps using his dad’s teachings and refining his own skills. Mark first became a Class A guide in 1988. Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about our Alberta whitetail hunts, travel, accommodations, and trophy opportunities.

What is the best time to hunt whitetail in Alberta?

The best time to hunt trophy whitetail in Alberta is during the peak November rut, typically from November 1st through November 30th. During this window, mature bucks that normally remain elusive become active throughout daylight hours as they search for estrous does.

At Alberta Legacy Hunts, we focus all our guided hunts during this critical period when bucks are most vulnerable and patterns are predictable. The November rut in central Alberta is when you’ll see the most deer activity, the most mature buck movement, and have your highest probability of encountering a trophy-class whitetail. Unlike early season hunts where deer patterns are primarily feed-to-bed movements, rut hunting means bucks can appear anywhere, anytime during legal shooting hours.

The Alberta rifle season runs from late October through November 30th, but our three generations of guiding experience have proven that those mid-November dates consistently produce the best results for serious trophy hunters.

Alberta whitetail hunt packages typically range from $6,500 to $8,500 USD depending on hunt duration and specific dates. At Alberta Legacy Hunts, our all-inclusive packages provide exceptional value and include:

  • 6-7 full days of guided hunting during peak November rut
  • Expert guide service with experienced professionals
  • Private lodging on a beautiful operating cattle ranch in the heart of our hunting area
  • All food including home-cooked baked pies and desserts
  • Complimentary pickup and drop-off from Calgary or Edmonton International Airport
  • Complete assistance with border entry process and all necessary game export paperwork
  • Field preparation and care of your trophy

We limit our hunter numbers each season to ensure a personal, high-quality experience and maintain the trophy potential of our exclusive private lands. Contact us directly at albertalegacyhunts@gmail.com or +1 501-253-3200 for current availability and detailed pricing for your preferred hunt dates.

Yes, Canadian law requires all non-resident alien hunters to book with a licensed outfitter when hunting big game in Alberta. You cannot hunt independently on any public or private land as a non-resident alien, which is why choosing the right Alberta outfitter is critical to your success.

Alberta Legacy Hunts is a proud member of the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS) and we are fully insured and bonded. Our head guide, Mark Groves, brings 30 years of law enforcement experience as a decorated Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, ensuring your safety is paramount. Mark has been a licensed Class A guide since 1988 and has served as an official Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young scorer for over 20 years, meaning he can field judge a trophy buck with just a glance.

When you hunt with us, you’re not getting a commercial operation shuffling dozens of hunters through—you’re getting genuine hands-on guidance from a small family outfit built on three generations of hunting tradition dating back to Mark’s father Allan Groves in the 1970s. This personal attention and intimate knowledge of our exclusive private lands is what separates us from larger commercial operations.

Our success rate at Alberta Legacy Hunts is consistently 80-90% for harvesting mature bucks, with virtually 100% of hunters getting quality shot opportunities on trophy-class deer. However, it’s important to understand what “trophy” means in the context of central Alberta whitetail hunting.

Alberta has one of the highest percentages of trophy-class bucks in all of North America. While the average hunter across the continent has roughly a 1-in-1,000 chance of taking a Boone & Crockett caliber buck (170 inches minimum for typical racks), in Alberta those odds improve dramatically to approximately 1-in-600. When you factor in guided hunts on managed private land during the November rut, your odds improve even further.

Realistic expectations for our hunts include:

  • Average mature bucks: 140-160 inch class
  • Regular opportunities: 150-170+ inch deer
  • Annual trophy bucks: 170+ inch bucks taken each season in this highly sought after WMU (Wildlife Management Unit)
  • Boone & Crockett potential: Realistic opportunity every hunt

Our exclusive private land access in highly productive Wildlife Management Units near Rocky Mountain House, combined with low hunting pressure and carefully managed harvest, creates an environment where bucks can reach true trophy class.

We hunt exclusively on private land in central Alberta between Rocky Mountain House and Ponoka. This is one of our most significant advantages and a key reason we can consistently produce trophy opportunities.

Our exclusive access to thousands of acres of private property means:

Low Pressure Environment: Unlike public crown land where numerous hunters compete, our private lands see limited hunting activity. Mature bucks feel secure and maintain more predictable patterns.

Managed Harvest: We carefully manage hunter numbers and practice selective harvest, allowing bucks to reach maturity. This isn’t a “shoot the first legal buck” operation—we’re focused on trophy-class animals.

Prime Habitat: Our private lands encompass a perfect mix of agricultural croplands and heavy timber. This foothills region east of the Rockies, where prairie meets forest, creates ideal conditions for whitetails to reach exceptional size and antler development.

Exclusive Opportunities: You won’t be competing with road hunters or dealing with other hunters pushing deer out of the area. When you book with Alberta Legacy Hunts, you’re hunting grounds that only our limited clientele access.

The private ranch where your lodging is located sits right in the heart of our hunting area, minimizing travel time and maximizing time on stand during critical morning and evening periods. This isn’t a situation where we’re driving hours to reach hunting areas—you’re already there.

Central Alberta whitetails are legendary for combining exceptional body size with massive antler development. Here’s what you can realistically expect:

Body Size:
Mature Alberta whitetails are among the largest-bodied deer in North America, with bucks commonly weighing 250-300 pounds field dressed. The long growing season, quality nutrition from agricultural crops, and superior genetics create deer that are simply bigger than their southern counterparts. Many hunters are shocked by the sheer mass of Alberta bucks.

Antler Scoring:

  • Typical Mature Bucks: 140-160 inches is a realistic expectation
  • Good Trophy Bucks: 150-170+ inches—we see these regularly
  • Exceptional Trophies: 170-190+ inches—taken each season in these WMUs
  • Record Book Potential: 170+ inches qualifies for Boone & Crockett; we have realistic opportunities annually

Antler Characteristics:
Alberta bucks are known for heavy, dark-horned antlers with good mass and tine length. The genetics in our area consistently produce bucks with impressive main beam length, good G2 and G3 tines, and the kind of mass that makes a rack look substantial even at a distance.

Field Judging:
Our head guide Mark Groves has been an official Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young scorer for over 20 years. He’ll help you field judge bucks accurately so you can make informed decisions about which deer to harvest. We’re not about pressuring you to shoot—we want you to take home the trophy you’ve dreamed of. For us, it is about the memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime.  This is fair chase hunting NOT high fence. This is the Canadian wilderness hunt you’ve always dreamed of since you saw big heavy dark antlered bucks in your first hunting magazine when you were a kid!

The Alberta whitetail rifle season runs from late October through November 30th, though specific dates can vary slightly by Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). At Alberta Legacy Hunts, we strategically focus our guided hunts during the peak November rut window—specifically November 1st through November 30th—when trophy opportunities are at their absolute best.
Why November Matters:

Early November (Nov 1-10): The pre-rut and seeking phase begins. Bucks start expanding their territories, scraping more aggressively, and daylight activity increases. This can be excellent hunting.

Peak Rut (Nov 5-20): This is the sweet spot. The chasing and breeding phases overlap during this period. Mature bucks that normally move only at night begin covering ground during legal shooting hours. This is when a 170-inch buck might show up at 10 AM on a ridge you’re watching—unpredictable behavior that creates opportunities.

Late November (Nov 20-30): The post-rut will see mature older bucks let down there guard for heavy feeding staying out later in the morning and coming out earlier in the evening. Does who missed being bred will still be sought after in this late hunt.  Some of our biggest bucks were taken on the last day of November!

Weather Considerations:
Central Alberta temperatures during November typically range from -10°C to +10°C (14°F to 50°F), though it can get colder. Light snow is common and actually improves hunting conditions by making deer more visible and increasing daytime movement.

Season Timing Strategy:
Unlike some outfitters who book hunts throughout the entire season, we concentrate our limited hunter bookings during those critical peak rut dates. This isn’t about filling calendar slots—it’s about putting you in the field when your odds of encountering a trophy buck are maximized.

For bowhunters, we also offer limited archery hunts earlier in the season, though November rifle hunts remain our primary focus and produce the highest success rates.

Getting to Alberta Legacy Hunts is straightforward, and we handle all the logistics to make your travel seamless.

Airport Options:

You can fly into either:

  • Edmonton International Airport (YEG):5-2 hours from our hunting area
  • Calgary International Airport (YYC): 2-3 hours from our hunting area

Both airports offer direct flights from major US cities and excellent connections. We recommend Edmonton as it’s slightly closer, but we provide complimentary pickup from either airport.

Our Transportation Service:

We provide complimentary pickup and drop-off service from whichever airport you choose. Simply let us know your arrival and departure times when you book, and we’ll coordinate everything. We typically pick up clients the day before the hunt begins, allowing you time to settle in, sight in your rifle if needed, and get a good night’s rest before your first morning hunt.

Travel Day Recommendations:

  • Arrival: Plan to arrive the afternoon/evening before your hunt starts. This buffers against flight delays and lost luggage issues.
  • Rifle Transportation: If checking firearms, we recommend arriving with time to spare in case paperwork needs attention.
  • Departure: We’ll return you to the airport the day after your hunt concludes, typically after a morning hunt.

Location Details:

Our hunting area is located in central Alberta between Rocky Mountain House and Ponoka, in the heart of some of the province’s most productive whitetail habitat. This foothills region east of the Rocky Mountains features a perfect blend of agricultural land and heavy timber—exactly the kind of habitat that produces trophy bucks.

Your private lodging is located on a beautiful operating cattle ranch right in the hunting area, so you’re not wasting valuable hunting time driving long distances each day.

Border & Export Assistance:

We’ll help you navigate the Canadian border entry process and handle all necessary paperwork for exporting your trophy and meat back to the United States. Many hunters worry about this process, but we’ve done it hundreds of times and make it simple.

Alberta Legacy Hunts offers all-inclusive packages designed to provide everything you need for a successful trophy whitetail hunt without hidden costs or surprise charges. Here’s exactly what’s included:

Additional Species (Subject to Availability – we do not permanently hold allocations for these species but do on occasion have hunts available):

  • Moose: Trophy bull moose are present in our hunting areas. Excellent opportunities for both bow and rifle hunters.
  • Black Bear: Spring and fall bear hunting available in the surrounding foothills and timber country.
  • Elk: The Rocky Mountain foothills west of our primary whitetail area hold good elk populations.

Hunting Area:

Our hunts take place in central Alberta from Rocky Mountain House east to Ponoka. This region of foothills, parkland, and agricultural areas east of the Rocky Mountains comprises thousands of square miles of diverse habitat. This isn’t just whitetail country—it’s one of the most productive big game regions in all of Canada. While hunting whitetails you may experience being up close and personal with two bull moose fighting, you just never know what video or photo opportunities will present themselves while out in these spectacular woods!

Focus on Quality:
That said, our primary focus remains on providing exceptional trophy whitetail opportunities. We’re not trying to be everything to everyone. We’ve chosen to specialize in what we do best: putting serious hunters on mature whitetail bucks during the peak November rut on exclusive private land. If you’re looking for a true trophy whitetail experience with the possibility of encountering other species, Alberta Legacy Hunts is the perfect choice.
